Logically spiritual

For the longest time, I pushed back against “logic” and “order”, “structure” and “form as though they were the very enemies of my being. Since my Asperger’s diagnosis, I’ve been compelled to review that attitude and flip it on its … Continue reading

Pigment of life

When a new paradigm starts to emerge, it can seem lacking in depth, an unfamiliar “convenience food” where a complex banquet of life used to be, throwing us into a turmoil of nostalgia for the old ways…though we don’t want those either. What calls us through the bewildering territory is an unspeakable force, an original spark without name… Continue reading

Jane Eyre – nineteenth century Aspie woman

Yesterday, I was at the Blackeyed Theatre stage production of Jane Eyre and, from the front balcony seat looking down onto the stage, I saw something so new yet just so obvious about this well-known character that I had missed … Continue reading

Exquisite life

The reason life is so intense when we are young is that the exquisite pain we experience is in proportion to how intensely we love; we experience, and welcome in, the full range of feelings as part of the sheer excitement and wonder of life. So what happened to all that? Do we miss it (in preference to being comfortably numb)? Can we call it back…maybe a bit…or did we forfeit it with “maturity”? What if the true wisdom of maturity invites us to remember…? Continue reading

Autism and the Age of Aquarius

Those on the spectrum are questioners, movers, shakers, speakers of blunt truth; we don’t dress things up or tolerate status quo when harm is involved. These traits empower and serve as a very backbone when our more visionary, empathic, willingly sociable yet almost hopelessly unstructured side knows not what to do next. Exploring the evolutionary context of autism in general and Asperger’s in particular. Continue reading

Being the unpruned tree

We should make room for some wildness in our gardens; it keeps us mindfully connected to the earth and it leads to interesting, surprising and oh-so important new experiences. Some pruning, here and there, asking the garden what it needs, can be helpful; yes, but there is no place for dubiously motivated shears in the next phase of our human adventure. Some would have us all as neatly trimmed and uniform as a garden made up of identical topiary but there’s a whole other tree that we’ve forgotten about (you could call it a Tree of Life); one that is so vast and other-dimensional (though ever-present) that many have fogotten how to look up and see it there… Continue reading

Coming out to play

Some people are born ‘naturals’ with children and some really aren’t. Some mistake immaturity for stupidity and impose their adult ‘know-how’ in a patronising way, delivering information on a need to know basis, making it prescriptive, leaving no room for … Continue reading
