Four and three-quarter seasons…

‘The New Four Seasons’ – complete with birdsong, electric guitar and didgeridoo – is all about the total reinvention of a piece of music that we thought we knew by heart…and it is also about very much more than that. When I heard it, I was much more deeply moved than I was prepared for and, in it, I have found an echo of something that is happening on a far broader scale; in our arts, in our world. Is it alright, or even possible, to play with an established composition – one as intricately complex as this – in a new way, to make it your own, to alter it? I find I want to say, the music itself is not sacrosanct; it is our creative urge and the need to allow that free rein that is. Kennedy has dared to show that music is certainly not sacrosanct and all the better for it; its as though the strictly demarcated ‘four seasons’ of our world (even the most intricately complex parts, most learned-by-heart aspects of it) have suddenly found room for something more, their edges blurred and expanded to fit more in, our very experience of them – of everything – softened, leaving us with far more than the sum of their parts. Winter light

For some time now, like one of those playful little projects saved up for nothing but the enjoyment of doing them, I’d been meaning to compile a video made up my of all the tiny snippets of footage of winter … Continue reading

Of peacocks and dragons…

(..and of suns and moons, of archangels with swords and little silver fish); bizarre as it sounds, these things make up the main substance of the story of my week. As though intent on taking me on a journey that … Continue reading

Out of the flames, into the light

This week, a chance encounter with a very familiar piece of music led me to what feels like the final conclusion of a long-running sub-plot of my life; a subconscious sticking-point that has under-layered the whole of my ‘life as … Continue reading

Messages from the void

Silence is information held in a void; each and every accomplished musician or dramatist knows this and uses it to grand effect. A pregnant pause, held for just the right number of notes, conveys a plethora of meaning that we … Continue reading

The point of creation

What is the point of creation? It’s a question I’ve asked a lot over time and even more recently…less because I feel I still seek an answer to it than because I enjoy the quick fire response that comes boomeranging … Continue reading

The birds

In an era when the television could be retired completely, for all I care, and when Nature provides some of the most joyful and entertaining moments of my experience, the various bird feeders placed within view of the window where … Continue reading

Judgement call

Identifying patterns, making connections and observing beautiful synchronicities being a marked trait of the ever-widening consciousness, I’ve been noticing for some time that examples of particular life-themes seem to arise all at once as though by design. To me, this always … Continue reading

Songs From the Shipyard…and other stories, told through music

In spite of a love of folk music in general, and The Unthanks in particular, that has lasted for many a year, I’ve as yet to write about it – having had no particular “angle in” other than my considerable … Continue reading

Kate Bush: 50 words for wonderful…

…I would use them all here!  Or even just one word adequate to convey the intense surge of anticipation I experience whenever there is a new Kate Bush album in the offing would do. This morning felt like Christmas, my … Continue reading
